It's time for the 2008 MHR Hay Ride!
Providing the horses with the hay they need is a very expensive proposition. We started this drive with enough hay for the next nine months, but thanks to rising expenses, we are now raising funds month to month.
We hope we have some enticements for you that may make our goals a little easier to achieve.
******
Thank you for making our first fundraiser for the hay fund a successful one. Our hay drive continues and we will be offering special opportunities to entice you to donate to help feed the horses.
Please remember that our horses are hungry and they love their hay! Contributions are gladly accepted on our donations page. Because MHR is a 501(3)c federally recognized non-profit organization, your donations are tax deductible.
Our first fundraising effort started August 27, with the generous donation of a beautiful print by the artist, Kathleen Parsons.
Kathleen Parsons (kathleenk9), a fellow FOB and Rosie/Misty watcher, graciously donated one of her prints of "Run with the Angels" to raise funds for the hay supply needed by the horses at MHR and we had a drawing for this wonderful work of art. Kathleen created an original painting of Barbaro as her personal tribute to him. She posted a picture of it on another thread and immediately received requests to purchase prints of the painting. Kathleen consented and all money above cost was donated to the buyer's favorite horse fund. The paper size of the entire print is 12 x 17 1/2, the image size is 9 1/2 x 13 - it fits into a standard 16 x 20 matt and frame. Kathleen has agreed to draw the winning name and will mail the print to the winner of the hay drawing - no charge for packaging or tax. The Barbaro print is signed by Kathleen and is dated January 29, 2007.
After a successful beginning to the hay drive, Kathleen herself drew the winning ticket. The winner was Sue Rollison, a long-time FOB who has donated generously to many rescues. Congratulations Sue!
Thanks to this effort, $1180 was raised for the Hay Fund. Thank you all for your support.
Now....on to our October effort!!!!
As part of her prize, our September winner, Sue Rollison, names Acey and Dublin as honorary "Hay Horses." Congratulations Acey and Dublin. Please meet your teammates, Jerri and Nellie. Hurry please, time's a-wasting!
Thanks to the tremendous generosity of our friend, myhund (Bev), we are able to offer TWO very valuable new first edition, hardcover books. Dear Bev donated these with the comment, "For the horses." Thank you, Bev!
Book #1 is OLD FRIENDS by Barbara D. Livingston (hardcover, first edition, published 2002)
"Barbara catches a spark in the eye of these older horses that reminds us of the days when their strides were long and they were filled with determination."
Julie Krone
Hall of Fame Jockey
[Look up this book on amazon, and be prepared to be surprised! This first edition, hard cover book in new condition is being sold starting at $169.79]
Book #2 is about Big Red himself, SECRETARIAT By Timothy Capps (hardcover, first edition, published 2003)
Book #19 in the thoroughbred legend series, this hardcover book is now out of print and getting hard to find.
Brand new, never opened, 222 pages.
We are happy to announce the lucky winner of our October hay drive: Peggi Loveless (aka MarginMaine). Congratulations Peggi! You are very lucky to have these valuable first edition books and thank you so much Bev for the generous donation.
This effort resulted in $790 in ticket sales for the Hay Fund. Thank you all!
How do we follow a beautiful print by our own artist, Kathleen Parsons (Run with the Angels) and two first edition books? How can we keep your interest and pick your wallet? Well, it's safe to say that everybody loves our two babies, Baby B and Spirit. What could we offer that's connected to them....
You're in for a very special treat this month! Our friend Kathleen Parsons has created another beautiful painting and she has made prints of this painting available to MHR.
This is "The Legacy." These two young horses are here today because of Barbaro and his effect on all of us. Rosie and Misty are two of the horses saved from auction in October 2006, who came to MHR in foal and who gave birth (in front of us all) to these two beautiful, well loved, safe foals.
click here for a closer look
Proceeds of the sale are generously donated to MHR by Kathleen and we are proud to announce that The Legacy print is now available on our web site.
But that's not our offer for the November Hay Drive. Please feel free to order the print, but we are offering chances to win the print at a very reasonable price: One chance is $5, or three chances for $8.
The winner of the Legacy print by Kathleen Parsons is none other than Gloria Nussbaum. Congratulations, Gloria! You're really going to enjoy this lovely print. Thanks to all who bought tickets.
Pulling the wagon this month are Rosie and Misty, who are looking forward to meeting Nellie and Jerri and telling them all about what it's like to be featured on marestare, day in and day out. They'll be pointing out the camera and giving the girls hints about what really works to get us all addicted to non-stop watching.
The last item for 2007 has been donated by our very generous friend and supporter, Karen Borstad. It's a lovely little pewter lapel pin that reminds all of us of our soon-to-arrive Percherons, Nellie and Jerri. The pin is 1 3/4" long head to tail, and about 1 1/2" tall.
In addition, the pin comes complete with its own home, a mare-foal trinket box, and a little nourishment...a milk chocolate rocking horse purchased at Vermont's Chocolate Barn. The perfect way to start 2008!
The top of the box is tiled with a picture of a mare and foal. Its dimensions are 6 3/4" x 5" x 2 1/4" and it's lined with a rich green velvet material.
We have a few of the pewter pins available to purchase for $30 each which includes shipping. Email Bev, obedog@aol.com to check for availability.
Our December winners are Betty Cordoza and KarenND. Betty won the pin and box, and Karen won the print. Thank you all for participating!
Now we move on the January's effort.
All FOBs know what January means, and we are steeling ourselves for the 29th, when our hearts were broken and we felt such disappointment and pain. The pain has faded a bit, but Barbaro's influence on all of us is still so very evident. Many of us are reading these words only because of Barbaro. Barbaro was a true athlete and an inspiration to us all. We still run for Barbaro!
Thanks to the generous donations of several FOBs, the theme for this month's drawing is
MHR: Our Tribute to Barbaro Memorial Hay Wagon Ride
GloriaI Nussbaum, winner of the November prize, has named the honorary horse team for this month's trek as Simba Marie and Jonah.

Thank you, Barbara!
We'll also be including a surprise magazine in this prize package.
As a January bonus, we're offering tickets for one more separate drawing for the print of Run with the Angels by our friend, FOB Kathleen Parsons. The Barbaro print is signed by Kathleen and is dated January 29, 2007. If you'd like a chance to win this print, tickets are $8.00 each, or 3 for $15.
Follow purchase instructions above, except please note that your payment is for the Hay Fund - Run with the Angels. The last day to purchase is 01/30, with drawing held on 01/31. |
January 31: The drawing was dutifully conducted by none other than ShellyA's Mr. Boxcar and Shelly was kind enough to provide pictures:

And are winners are Diane Martin (aka sgm, aka the horse crooner) who won the Barbaro package, and Ava Connely (aka 4Mistycat), who won 'Run with the Angels.' Congratulations Diane and Ava, and thank you for supporting the hay drive! And Boxy and Shelly thank you so much too! We were honored.
The February ride will start Monday, February 4 and end February 28 with the drawing on February 29. Our December winner, Betty Cordoza, has chosen Acey, Shiloh and General for the lead horses. Says Betty, "I am particularly fond of the three blind horses, having worked twenty years in Special Education, and some of my favorite students were the blind and/or visually handicapped students)."
Two different opportunities are presented this month:
MHR's Valentine Ride: Girl Power!!

The babies wanted to donate something to this but being only babies it was hard for them to figure out what they have for the hay ride prize. After careful and long consideration they decided that this was the best prize of all:
Kisses from Baby B and Spirit. But they also know this is a fund raiser so the drawing prize will be this:
A beautiful Sterling silver Angel Horse Pendant, donated by the designer, Bud Cravener, in honor of all the MHR horses and Barbaro who have crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Thanks to Linda H. for finding this talented artist and obtaining this donation. Tickets are $10.00 for one or 2 for $15.00
The MHR Hay Wagon will start to traverse around the country on April 2nd . It will return home on April 29th with a drawing on the 30th. The winner of the March Hay Fundraiser Kathie has chosen Rosie and her beau Trooper to pull this month’s wagon.
Since the Valentine and Easter Cookie fund raisers were so successful, it’s time to expand to a full menu of tasty hay dishes for the horses. Nerdy Ned has been secretly taking cooking classes with our very own Cathy P. It’s with great pride we announce the new “Restaurante MHR” cuisine available for the horse/s of your choice.
You may join one or more horses in the Restaurante MHR. It is your choice and includes culinary choices for dinner, lunch, and of course, tips for Nerdy Ned. Our lovely hostess, Stephanie, will notify Mary of orders received and she will e-mail you a “reservation” e-ticket. Our seating hostess, Ro will mark your name next to the horse or horses of your choice. Have you ever envisioned a candlelight dinner for you and a horse at MHR? Perhaps you've thought about “ponying” up to the buffet table with your favorite filly or colt? Here’s your chance. On a diet? Then Nerdy Ned would love a tip from you.

April winner Melody has chosen Jerri and Apple to be the lead horses for this month's hay ride.
MHR presents: Barbaro's Kentucky Derby Hay Wagon Ride.

To compliment the model and book, also included in this prize is a hand painted pewter Barbaro-Prado pin.
Lastly, something that goes along with every Derby -- official Kentucky Derby commemorative mint julep glasses, four of them. Each year is different, but somewhere the glass features roses and a TBred. On the back of each is a roster of each year's winners and a question mark for the year of that particular year's race. They are 1992, 1991, 1990 and 1989 and have been donated by SusanE . This is an example of what a Kentucky Derby mint julep looks like:
All of the above May items are one prize. Tickets are $15 each or two for $20. The hay ride will begin Saturday, May 3rd and will end Friday May 30th with a drawing on the 31st.
Second prize is an unsigned 8x10 framed Barbara Livingston photo of Barbaro taken at Churchill Downs. Photo donated by Jeri of the O'Hay Clan.

Tickets for this prize are $5/ea or 3 for $10.
May winner Pat Skidmore has chosen Whiskey and Sinatra to be the lead horses for this month's hay ride.
Frankly, we're not doing too well with our most recent hay drives. We started out in this effort in a very strong way, but because of what we assume is mainly the economy, contributions have dwindled. The cost of hay is extremely high in southern Nevada and our expenses, as are all of yours, through the roof! We've decided that this month we must reach a certain level before the sales will close. If that level isn't reached, sales will continue for these items through July.
This month we have a very special jewelry piece by Jane Heart donated by one of our super special supporters.
BARBARO™ heart brooch in sterling silver. Standard pin finding goes across the back and is not shown in photo. The heart measures 1 1/8" by 1 1/8" and has the BARBARO trademark stamp on the back. Copyright 2007. This pin has a retail value of $210.

Tickets for this high value item are one for $15 and two tickets for $25. This a gorgeous piece. Many many thanks to our donor and, of course. to Jane Heart for creating it.
The second very special offering is the winner's choice of ONE of three signed Barbara Livington framed 8x10 Barbaro photographs. We are delighted and very grateful to say that these signed photographs have been donated by Barbara Livingston herself, who is a fan of Miracle Horse Rescue. Thank you so much Ms. Livingston!
The choices are

Tickets for the frame and choice of pictures are $15 for one or two for $25. The winner of the drawing may pick one photo of choice.
