PMU Rescue Attempt Underway
MHR is involved in an international effort to rescue mares from a soon-to-be-closed PMU ranch in Canada. We are obligated to take two mares out of 29 put up for sale by the rancher. Those horses not purchased will be sent to auction and probably to slaughter.
Jerri (left top) and Nellie are the Percheron mares we are adopting. We chose them because they're older and probably not as appealing to the public when on the auction block. They are likely in foal with a due date of May 2008.

All aboard the 2008 Hay Wagon!
Providing the horses with the hay they need is a very expensive proposition. We have enough hay for the next nine months, but we want to start the fund for our next purchase and we hope we have some enticements for you that may make our goals a little easier to achieve.

New arrivals at MHR
On Saturday, September 1, 2007 visitors to MHR for the First Annual Labor Day Celebration witnessed a rescue first hand. A starved 20+ year old thoroughbred without a name arrived at MHR. She was part of a large number of animals seized from one individual. She's estimated to be about 400 lbs underweight. Named Simba Marie by the visiting FOBs she settled in to her new quarters quite nicely. She seems to very much enjoy her hay and vitamins. Simba Marie has been examined by a veterinarian and also had her teeth examined and treated. The doctor recommends that the current diet be continued and that her only problem is starvation. We hope that we have many years ahead of us with Simba Marie and that she enjoys her new home very much.
On September 13, 2007 MHR welcomed Buttercup, a 26 year old palomino mare with a reported lung problem. Buttercup traveled by trailer all the way from Pennsylvania. She is a beautiful little girl with a determined personality. Her breathing has been fine since her arrival, but she did have a bout with colic. She recovered from that nicely and eagerly devours her Equine Senior every day.
Read about Simba Marie and Buttercup on our Permanent Residents page as they make progress in adusting and putting on much-needed weight.
